Bio
Elliott D. Woods is an independent writer and photographer from the United States. Before becoming a journalist, Elliott served in the Virginia Army National Guard for six years, including a one-year deployment to Iraq from 2004-2005. After graduating with Highest Distinction from the University of Virginia in 2008, Elliott studied Arabic at the American University of Cairo. He is an alumnus of the Eddie Adams Workshop and was the 2011 Frank B. Vogel Scholar in Nonfiction at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.
Elliott won the 2011 Ellie for Best Multimedia Package from the American Society of Magazine Editors for Assignment Afghanistan, an interactive project focusing on the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan. Elliott’s VQR story “Digging Out,” about mining in Afghanistan, was a 2011 Ellie finalist in the Reporting Category. His work from Gaza in the aftermath of Operation Cast Lead received a citation from the Overseas Press Club in 2010, and he was the winner of the 2010 Staige D. Blackford Prize for Non-Fiction from VQR, where he is a frequent contributor.
His work has also appeared in Granta, Mother Jones, GlobalPost, and TIME.
