Marjah

The U.S. Marines pushed into Marjah in a major offensive called Operation Hamkari in February 2010. By summer, Lima Company, 3/6 Marines, was bogged down in a fight against a largely unseen enemy, suffering major casualties from small improvised explosive devices. Marjah sits inside of a series of instersecting ring canals designed as part of a U.S. agricultural assistance project in the 1950s. By the time the Marines showed up, it had become a major Taliban opium production center.
